STUDENT ASSAULTED, ROBBED
On Oct. 20, a female York University community member was robbed after 7 p.m., on the east side of the Harry W. Arthurs Common.

The victim reported that the suspect was a black male with brown eyes, between six feet and six-footfour with a medium build and weighing between 180 and 240 lbs.
He removed her glasses and broke them in front of her before stealing her iPod, said Toronto police.

    Cellphone stolen

The following day, two suspects approached a male victim, took his cell phone out of his hand, hit him over the head and fled the scene.

Police said the altercation took place at the intersection of Assiniboine Rd. and Sentinel Rd. at around 9:30 p.m.
The identities of the suspects are unknown at this time. Some York University students have suggested that security improvements should be made on campus.
“This should not be happening. I heard that last year it happened too [ . . . ] Maybe some security improvements should be taken on the campus by the university and maybe by
Toronto police,” said Imam Uddin, a biochemistry student.
Physics student Anthony Hugh suggested security cameras should be part of the solution.
“York University should put cameras in less-travelled places, like the fifth floor of the library.”

The Orion - Hazards found by students, president

The campus community did its part to combat crime Thursday during the fifth annual Moonlight Safety Walk.

The event, which took place from 6:30 to 8 p.m., allowed faculty, staff, police and student volunteers to separate and check various areas of the campus. Participants checked all blue light phones and looked for safety risks such as poorly lit areas, overgrown plants and tripping hazards, said Lt. Robyn Hearne of the University Police.

The campus is headed in the right direction in terms of safety, since violent crime has gone down, Hearne said. Despite safety measures on campus, students should still be cautious when passing through at night.

The Herald-Sun - Duke officer charged in rape

The Duke University Police Department has suspended, with pay, an officer charged in a “bondage rape” in Alabama where he allegedly gagged and handcuffed a woman in his car before violating her.

And the sheriff in Dothan, Ala., where Webster Delenn Simmons, 37, was charged Monday with felony first-degree rape and felony first-degree sodomy, said he believes the crime may not be an isolated event.

“I think there’s a real distinct possibility he’s done this before,” Sheriff Andy Hughes of Houston County said Tuesday. “We are alerting other law enforcement agencies nationwide to see if they have unsolved rapes like this. We would not be shocked at all if he had done this before.”

The suspect held what felt like a gun to the victim’s back and demanded money, which the victim then gave him. Gallo confirmed that the victim was unharmed.
