A 21-year-old Buffalo man was arrested by University at Buffalo police Monday for allegedly robbing a South Campus student at gunpoint.

Dandre Martin is accused of stealing the student's cellphone while the student was walking on campus, near Main Street at about 6 a.m. Monday.

State concealed carry law takes effect

Wisconsin’s new concealed carry law takes effect today, Tuesday, Nov. 1, and it brings important changes to rules on the UW-Madison campus.

Permitted concealed carry of weapons will be allowed throughout the state, including on campus grounds and parking areas of the UW-Madison.

The law allows members of the public to carry concealed firearms (with a permit), knives (not switchblades), tasers and billy clubs, except in areas where expressly prohibited by law.

It is the university’s goal to implement the law with the least potential disruption to the academic mission of the university, says UWPD Chief Sue Riseling.

There are several important provisions to the law and how it is being implemented on campus:

• Signs have been posted on all building entrances informing individuals that firearms and weapons continue to be prohibited in campus buildings. 
• No employee shall carry a firearm or other weapon at any time while in the course and scope of employment unless it is necessary as determined or approved by the chancellor or Chief Riseling.
•  In addition, the law allows the university to ban concealed weapons at outdoor events, such as athletic events and concerts.
• The university will continue to ban the open carry of firearms and other weapons at all times and in all places on campus. 
• If you see a person who is not a police officer in uniform carrying a weapon in a UW-Madison building, call 911. Do not assume a person has a license. UWPD recommends thinking “safety first” and if you err, please err on the side of calling police. Police officers are trained to react appropriately to those legally or illegally carrying weapons.

VCU and Richmond Police are investigating yet another robbery on campus. This time, a female student was robbed near a campus parking deck on Bowe St.

Here's a campus alert sent out by the university.

In compliance with the provisions of the federal Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act of 1988, Virginia Commonwealth University is giving notice of a robbery. VCU Police report that a suspect approached a female student on the south alley of the Bowe Street deck on campus at approximately 7:18 p.m. The suspect is described as a black male, approximately 5'10" tall, wearing a black hoodie with silver writing and black sweat pants.

On Thursday, administrators at Grand Valley State University notified students about a possible sex assault against a woman by a stranger on campus, the second time in two weeks such a notification has been issued.

A man allegedly attempted to sexually assault a UC Berkeley student on the edge of campus Sunday evening near Tolman Hall.

Greater collaboration between campus and local police departments is needed when investigating major crimes at Virginia colleges, a Virginia State Crime Commission panel concluded.

At a meeting earlier today, the commission agreed to explore possible legislation that would mandate “mutual aid agreements” between jurisdictions.

President Gee sent the email out Thursday to students, and said he will have a plan ready in the coming weeks.

  The latest crime happened Wednesday night when two female students were robbed in their car on East Woodruff Avenue.

Virginia lawmakers may require more cooperation between college police departments and local law enforcement agencies in investigations of on-campus deaths and alleged rapes.

But it appears unlikely that local police would automatically take responsibility for investigating those cases, based on Wednesday's deliberations by the Virginia State Crime Commission.

Ohio State released a Timely Warning on Tuesday night informing students of the fifth robbery in the campus area in just over two weeks.

According to the warning, a male student had his possessions forcibly removed from him by two males who implied they had a gun. The suspects were described as African-American under the age of 20. The suspects were approximately 6-feet tall, thin build. The incident occurred at 1501 Neil Avenue.
