DOE cites Yale for underreporting crime, sex assault | Yale Daily News

The Department of Education has found that the University violated several federal regulations — which include a mandate to report all sex offenses to the government — at the end of a nearly seven year-long investigation into the Yale Police Department last week. Now Yale could face punishment ranging from fines to reduced federal funding for student aid as a result.

According to the DOE’s May 23 Final Program Review Determination, which was addressed to University President Richard Levin, Yale violated the Clery Act when it failed to properly compile and disclose crime statistics. The University also failed to comply with the timely warning and crime log requirements and improperly defined campus boundaries. Additionally, Yale failed to report accurate crime statistics for the Medical School and Yale-New Haven Hospital. Required policy statements were also omitted from campus security reports.

Two students were robbed at gunpoint off-campus, and police are still searching for the two suspects, officials said.

Prince George's County Police have made no arrests and no suspects have been named yet in the ongoing investigation, according to county police Crpl. Mike Rodriguez.

At about 1:30 a.m. yesterday morning, two university students were walking along Adelpi Road, near Curry Drive, when two men approached the pair. One suspect reportedly produced a handgun and ordered the two students to "get on the ground," and they listened, according to a university-wide crime alert sent by University Police Spokesman Capt. Marc Limansky.

The suspects allegedly robbed the students of money and several personal items before fleeing the area, according to the crime alert. The victims then went to Queen Anne's Hall to report the incident, but did not sustain any injuries, Rodriguez said.

Police would not disclose the identities of the student victims.

University Police have no further information, Limansky said. Because it occurred in their jurisdiction, county police are leading the investigation, he said.

Police are looking for two males, both around 5-feet, 7-inches, about 19 to 23 years old and weighing about 150 pounds. The suspect who carried the handgun is reportedly a black male with dreadlocks and was described as wearing a dark colored T-shirt and blue jeans at the time of incident, according to the crime report. His companion is described a Hispanic male with long, curly black hair who was wearing a cream colored T-shirt with blue jeans at the time of the incident, Rodriguez said.

OUDaily.com | OU Regents change sexual assault policy, approve Lon Kruger

Victims of sexual assault on OU’s campus have a longer time to report an incident after the OU Board of Regents extended the crime’s statute of limitations Thursday during the board’s May meeting.

Students now have 365 days to report a sexual assault incident instead of 30, according to the board’s agenda. The original wording of the policy unintentionally put a 30 day deadline on reporting an incident, President David Boren said. This change clarifies the policy and provides students with enough time to report an incident, Boren said.
