In fact, because of the university's relatively rapid growth in student population and in physical size, many neighbors would argue that the areas around ODU have been more unstable than most.

Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act

The Crime Awareness and Campus Security Act of 1990 and the Jeanne Clery Act of 1998 requires Des Moines University to prepare and publish certain information concerning its policies and procedures which affect all current students, employees and applicants for enrollment and employment. The information, outlined below, must be made available to these groups of persons, upon request, annually. The University considers the information and policies pertaining to individual safety or security described below to be of great importance. However, the University must explicitly disclaim any contract, warranty or guarantee of safety as between it and others on the University campus and arising out of this compliance. No matter what methods and procedures are in place relative to safety and security, an individual’s safety is largely his or her own responsibility.

2011-06-22 to 2011-06-24

On June 22 at 2:51 p.m. an individual reported that a tire on her vehicle had been slashed when it was parked in Thompson Hall lot, resulting in $75 damage. The incident is under investigation.

On June 22 at 1:12 p.m. a student reported being harassed by a person unknown to her. Officers were able to locate the subject and issue a warning to have no contact with the victim.

On June 23 at 7:15 a.m. an employee reported receiving a harassing phone call from an unknown person. The incident is under investigation.

Sexual Assaults: Are Midwestern Universities Turning A Blind Eye?

Last week, a Chicago Tribune article reported startlingly low arrest and conviction rates in cases of sexual assaults across a selection of six Illinois and Indiana universities and colleges. Sexual health advocates expressed frustration, but some local campuses continue to defend the way they handle sex crimes internally.

Cornell University Police are investigating a report of an assault early Sunday evening that may have been racially motivated.

An Asian male reported that he was riding his bicycle along College Avenue near the intersection with Campus Road when four individuals in a silver or white sedan yelled racial epithets at him, according to the university's police.
