Enhancing Security at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

Crime Alerts - Mass Email Notifications - Illini Alert

The community’s safety is and will continue to be the highest priority for the University of Illinois Police Department. To help ensure the safety of those in the campus community, we have and will continue to use mass email to alert the public regarding serious, violent crimes which occur in the campus district.

The University of Illinois Police Department wants to provide accurate and thorough information so individuals can take appropriate personal protective actions based on the types of serious criminal activity reported. As we continue to respond to reports of violent crimes occurring in the campus district, we are investing in additional resources to prevent and/or increase our ability to solve these crimes.

To be more specific, we have recently obtained a $100,000 commitment from the Chancellor of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign to purchase a state of the art camera system which will dramatically increase our ability to identify, locate and arrest offenders. These cameras will be placed in areas of campus that historically have higher crime rates and/or other areas of campus that require video security.

We also can be the best crime-preventers, says UAB Police Department Capt. Roderick Wilkins. That's the central message of the new UAB Police program S.W.E.E.P. - Security, Watchfulness, Education, Encouragement and Preparation.

Wilkins says statistics show that UAB is one of the safest campuses in the state and the country, and that is due in large part to the employees and students who take precautionary steps and watch out for one another. There have been several high-profile incidents involving Hopkins students, including a break-in at a student's off-campus house last fall in which an intruder was killed with a samurai sword. Fraternity member Christopher B. Elser was killed in 2004 after a struggle with a knife-wielding burglar. The next year, a man fatally beat student Linda Trinh. The two student deaths prompted the university to beef up security on and off campus.

Using a College Visit to Check Up On Campus Safety and Health

Your campus visits aren’t just about academics and social offerings. A campus tour and visit can also be your chance to see what "home" could be like at your potential school. For many of us, home means security, safety, familiarity, and belonging. Your new digs should offer some of the same amenities, since they could be home base for the next four years.
