  • Friday, May 27, 2011

    Julian Dessen, 20, of Champaign, was arrested at 6:45 p.m. Thursday on the top level of parking garage F-29, 1201 Dorner Drive, Urbana, for possession of drug paraphernalia. A passenger in Dessen’s vehicle, Gabriel Murrey-Inskeep, 18, of Champaign, was arrested for possession of cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia. Police arrested the men following a suspicious vehicle stop.

     

    Wesley D. Hedrick, 22, of Champaign, was arrested at 5 p.m. Thursday in the 1200 block of West Springfield Avenue, Urbana, for criminal trespass to state supported land. He had previously been issued a U. of I. letter of no trespass May 8.

     

    Four copper downspouts valued at $1,000 were reported stolen at 2 p.m. Thursday from the south side of Busey-Evans Hall, 1115 W. Nevada St., Urbana. The incident was reported by a U. of I. housing maintenance supervisor

    A U. of I. student reported at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday that his cellular phone, estimated value $700, was stolen at about 5:45 p.m. Monday while he was playing basketball at the Activities and Recreation Center, 201 E. Peabody Drive, Champaign. The student had left the phone in a pair of pants on the sideline.

    Richard E. Frazier, 34, of Champaign, was arrested at 12:15 p.m. Tuesday near the intersection of Springfield and Goodwin avenues, Urbana, for operating an uninsured vehicle, driving with a suspended license and unlawful use of registration. Frazier was driving a scooter with a passenger reportedly hanging on dangerously on the back when police stopped him. The passenger, Resnee A. Smith-Rodriguez, 22, of Urbana, was arrested for resisting/obstructing a police officer and for having an outstanding in-state warrant.

    Arien G. Melton, 23, of Champaign, was arrested at 5:15 p.m. Monday in the 200 block of East Green Street, Champaign, for an outstanding warrant from the city of Urbana and one from Iroquois County, Ill. Melton was the passenger in a vehicle whose driver was ticketed for driving with a suspended license.

    Hilario Cruz, 49, of Champaign, was arrested at 8:45 a.m. Monday near Lincoln Avenue and Clark Street, Urbana, for not having a valid driver's license or proof of insurance. Cruz was reportedly pulled over for not having a license plate on his vehicle.

    Michael B. Lane, 27, of Ina, Ill., was arrested at 9 p.m. Saturday in the 600 block of East John Street, Champaign, for illegal transportation of alcohol and driving with a suspended license. He was pulled over for a traffic infraction.

    Alexander R. Gillespie, 20, of Champaign,, was arrested in the 600 block of East Green Street, Champaign, for underage drinking and resisting arrest. The arresting officer said he witnessed Gillespie and two others move a construction barricade into the street. When the officer stopped to question the men, Gillespie reportedly fled.

    A wallet with cash and credit cards was reported stolen at 9 p.m. Thursday from a locked locker at the Activities and Recreation Center, 201 E. Peabody Drive, Champaign. Someone cut the lock to gain entry.

     

    A locked bike valued at $200 was reported stolen Thursday from a rack at University High School, 1212 W. Springfield Ave., Urbana. The bike was left at the rack May 1.

    A U. of I. employee told U. of I. police on Wednesday that someone had stolen her laptop computer, valued at $1,500, from her office in the Coordinated Science Laboratory, 1308 W. Main St., Urbana, sometime between May 14 at 6 p.m. and noon Monday (May 16).

     

    A laptop computer valued at $2,000 was stolen from an office in Roger Adams Lab, 600 S. Mathews Ave., Urbana, between May 13 at 9:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. Tuesday (May 17). The computer subsequently was found by a U. of I. student who said he found it near the intersection of Lincoln and California avenues, Urbana. He said that because he noticed the computer had a U. of I. property tag on it, he turned it into the Campus Information Technologies and Educational Services office (better known as CITES). The person who reported the theft of the computer got in touch with U. of I. police on Tuesday to let them know the computer had been turned in to CITES.

    A building services worker reported at 8:15 a.m. Tuesday that someone had driven through a flower bed located near the Quad and southeast corner of the Henry Administration Building, 506 S. Wright St., Urbana. The worker, who reported the incident to police after arriving to work, estimated the damage at $1,500.

    Tony B. Brown, 46, of Champaign, was arrested at 10 p.m. Monday in the 1800 block of Fourth Street, Champaign, for an outstanding warrant. Police stopped his vehicle because he had been driving without having turned on the headlights, police said. A passenger in the vehicle was issued a notice to appear in court for possession of cannabis.

    The burglary of a vehicle was reported at 9:30 a.m. Saturday in the 1600 block of South Wright Street, Urbana. A window was broken to gain entry and a GPS and other items, estimated value $500, were reportedly stolen.

    A bike locked to a rack outside Pennsylvania Avenue Residence halls was reported stolen Friday, no time listed. The bike was valued at $500.

    A video projector, estimated value $900, was reported stolen at 8:45 a.m. Friday from an unlocked Department of Geology classroom inside the Natural History Building, 1301 W. Green St., Urbana. The projector had been affixed to the ceiling.

    A U. of I. student living in the 300 block of West Green Street, Champaign, reported at 5:15 p.m. Friday that she had lost her credit card two weeks prior and that somone had in the interim charged more than $800 in items at area stores.

    U. of I. student Grant Menges, 27, of Belleville, Ill., was arrested at 2:45 a.m. Wednesday for driving under the influence of alcohol and for operating an uninsured vehicle. Police say Menges' vehicle was pulled over after he made an illegal turn in the 800 block of West Indiana Avenue, Urbana.

     

    A computer and phone, total value $1,000, were reported stolen at 11:45 p.m. Thursday from a student residing in Sherman Hall, 909 S. Fifth St., Champaign. The student noticed the items missing after packing for summer break.

     

    Employees at the Latino Study Center, 510 E. Chalmers St., Champaign, reported to police at about 11:15 a.m. Thursday that someone had tried after office hours to enter the building by removing a screen and breaking out a glass window. No items were missing; damage was estimated at $500.

     

    Building workers reported at 7:30 a.m. Thursday that someone after office hours had broken a parking-light pole (valued at $3,000) at the Beckman Institute, 405 N. Mathews Ave., Urbana. The 4-foot concrete pole was located in the building's circle drive area.

     

    Employees of the U. of I. anthropology department reported Wednesday morning at about 9:45 that someone had gotten in to a faculty member's office on the third floor of Davenport Hall, 607 S. Mathews Ave., Urbana, after office hours. Entry apparently had been made through an open window, which employees said was closed when they left work. No items of monetary value were taken.

    U. of I. students playing basketball at the outdoor courts at the southeast corner of Oak Street and Gregory Drive, Champaign, reported two cell phones, total value $700, stolen at 9 p.m. Wednesday.

    U. of I. student Justin T. Boone, 19, of Champaign, was arrested at 4 p.m. Wednesday for theft from Illini Bookstore, 809 S. Wright St., Champaign. A store employee told police he witnessed Boone place four textbooks inside a backpack and then try to return them at the resale counter.

    Alexis F. Brown, 20, of Champaign, was arrested at 2:15 a.m. Wednesday for having two outstanding in-state warrants. Police stopped Brown’s vehicle near university parking garage B-4, 1201 W. University Ave., Urbana.

     A bicycle valued at $300 was reported stolen at 9:45 p.m. Monday from a locked bike rack at Wardall Hall, 1010 W. Illinois St., Urbana. Someone cut the cable of the bike lock.

     Alexander Harshbarger, 21, of Urbana, was arrested at 11:22 a.m. Tuesday in the 200 block of East Peabody Drive, Champaign, for reckless conduct, obstructing justice and an outstanding in-state warrant. A witness said Harshbarger, a passenger in a vehicle, was shouting at other motorists and threw a water bottle at one before police stopped the vehicle.

     A student residing in Saunders Hall, 902 College Court, Urbana, reported the theft of his laptop computer, estimated value $800, at 10 p.m. Monday.

    An unattended laptop computer and backpack, total value $1,400, were reported stolen at 2 p.m. Monday from a student studying in the Undergraduate Library, 1401 W. Gregory Drive, Urbana.

     

    An unattended laptop computer valued at $1,000 was reported stolen at 8:46 p.m. Monday from a student studying in Grainger Engineering Library Information Center, 1301 W. Springfield Ave., Urbana.

     

    U. of I. student Timothy M. Smith, 23, of Champaign, was arrested at 6 p.m. Monday at his apartment in the 500 block of East White Street, Champaign, for possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver. Smith was arrested after officers with the U. of I. Narcotics Unit served a warrant at his residence and allegedly found psilocybin mushrooms.

    U. of I. students Lauren A. Gher, 20, of Champaign, and Matthew G. Hultine, 20, of Champaign, were arrested at 12:15 a.m. Monday for possession of drug paraphernalia at their residence in the 300 block of East Chalmers Street, Champaign. Police served a search warrant at the residence a week prior but returned because Hultine, listed on the warrant, was not present.

     

    Jamie M. Johnson, 20, of Champaign, was arrested at 8:45 p.m. Saturday for an outstanding city of Champaign warrant following a traffic stop near Goodwin Avenue and Illinois Street, Urbana.

     

    Linda D. Barber, 32, of Champaign, was arrested at 11:45 p.m. Friday near Armory Avenue and Wright Street, Champaign, for criminal trespass and for an outstanding Champaign County warrant.

     

    Sean William Henderson, 20, of Champaign, was arrested at 4:30 p.m. Friday in the 1300 block of West Springfield Avenue, Champaign, for residential burglary and resisting arrest. Henderson is alleged to have last week entered the room of a sleeping student in Oglesby Hall, 1005 College Court, Urbana, and to have stolen a laptop computer.

     

    The construction crew working on the Ikenberry Commons project, 107 Gregory Drive, Champaign, has reported several incidents of minor damage in the last few weeks, the most recent at 3:30 p.m. Thursday involving concrete stairs. Someone damaged the stairs to such an extent that a $5,000 “re-pour” is necessary, a foreman told police.

     

    A laptop computer valued at $1,100 was reported stolen at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday from a student studying in the Undergraduate Library, 1402 W. Gregory Drive, Urbana.

    Juan M. Meneses, 24, of Urbana, was arrested at 2:14 a.m. today (May 6) in the 1100 block of South Sixth Street, Champaign, for driving under the influence of alcohol. The vehicle was stopped for driving the wrong way on a one-way street. Menses was cited for that as well as for improper lane usage.

    Matthew Clayton Schmidt, 24, of Champaign, was arrested at 11:30 p.m. Thursday for possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver and possession of cannabis with intent to deliver. Police executed a court-ordered search warrant investigating sale of cannabis from Schmidt's apartment.

    At 7:45 p.m. Thursday, an officer patrolling the Illini Union, 1401 W. Green St., Urbana, was alerted by a student yelling that someone had stolen his friend's backpack that included a $600 laptop. The victim had taken it into the restroom but left it outside the stall. Joe D.T. Spearman, 21, of Danville, was arrested at 7:52 p.m. for theft over $500 and possession of drug paraphrenalia after he was found rifling the backpack.

    In a separate incident during the same patrol, Darien Tobias Tre Smith, 18, of Urbana, was arrested for possession of a controlled substance without a prescription and for possession of cannabis with intent to deliver.

    U. of I. student Matthew Aaron Szucko, 20, of Urbana, 20, was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, for DUI over 0.08 percent and for squealing tires, which is why his vehicle was stopped at 2:28 a.m. today (May 5) in the 600 block of East Kirby Avenue, Champaign. His blood alcohol level was 0.112 percent.

     

    Matthew D. Lomax, 20, of Champaign, and Parkland student Brockton S. Williams, 20, of Champaign, were arrested for burglary in connection with a series of burglaries at Campus Recreation Center East and the Activities and Receation Center beginning in January. Lomax also was arrested for theft of services for using the ARC facilities without paying for a guest pass, and Williams also was arrested for trespass to state-supported land. Police stopped a vehicle that carried Lomax and Williams. on March 9. A search of the vehicle yielded items reported stolen from ARC. A subsequent search of their residence found other items that were taken from unlocked lockers at CRCE, including wallets, cell phones, credit cards, driver’s licenses and Social Security cards that were taken in three incidents on Jan. 19.

    The passenger-side tires were slashed on a car parked in lot E12, 1206 S. Fourth St., Champaign, while it was parked there from about 9:45 to 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday.

     

    A dented roof of a Toyota Scion and muddy footprints on the hood and roof of the vehicle were reported Monday. The damage, estimated at $3,000, was believed to have happened on April 25. The owner parked the car in lot E7, 1201 S. Oak St., Champaign, that morning and when she drove away at lunch, a “giant splash of water came down on the windshield,” consistent with a large puddle on the roof. The owner could not see the damage to the car; it was pointed out by a friend Monday.

    Someone spray-painted graffiti on the large southeast door at the U. of I. Ice Arena, 406 E. Armory Ave., Champaign, early Wednesday morning. A U. of I. employee told police the graffiti wasn't on the door when she left the building at about 1 a.m. but was there when she returned at about 3:40 a.m. The damage was estimated at $300.

    Augustus D. Johnson, 35, of Urbana, was arrested at 12:11 a.m. Tuesday for unlawful use of weapons following a traffic stop near Lincoln and Fairview avenues, Urbana. Johnson, a passenger in the vehicle, was also arrested for having outstanding Champaign County and city of Champaign warrants.

     

    A vehicle parked in university parking lot F23, 1100 W. Florida Ave., Urbana, was reported damaged at 2:45 p.m. Monday. Someone dented the roof of the vehicle in the past two weeks, causing an estimated $1,000 in damage.
